As for hundreds of artists, St Ives became a centre for writers and poets once the railway linking St Erth to the town opened in 1877. The town and surrounding countryside as well as the sea have been a constant inspiration to generations of writers over the years.  A number moved to the town permanently, while others would and continue to make regular visits. Their writings cover the areas of history, the arts, fiction, biography, criticism, local customs and folk stories.

St Ives has also produced many of its own important writers and poets whose work has been influential in the writing of the history of the town and wider area.

St Ives has had its own newspapers since 1889: The St Ives Weekly Summary and Visitors’ List from 1889 to 1919; The Western Echo from 1903 to 1957; The St Ives Times from 1913 to 1954 and The St Ives Times & Echo from 1955 to the present day. Many writers have contributed articles to one or more of these publications over the years, and early in the 20th century poetry was a regular feature of these weekly journals.

The St Ives Library service has generously made available to the Archive Study Centre all these publications on microfilm, and articles may be researched and copied for a small fee.

The Archive Centre currently has files on the following writers and poets:
