CREATING A SPLASH:  THE ST. IVES SOCIETY OF ARTISTS: THE FIRST TWENTY-FIVE YEARS (1927-1952)

AUTHOR  David Tovey

Catalogue and Dictionary of Members of the St. Ives Society of Artists for the first 25 years 1927-1952, which accompanied an exhibition of the same name touring six venues around Britain between June 2003 and July 2004.

This copiously illustrated, 300 page book contains biographical information of all the members of the St. Ives Society of Artists. Tovey, in his survey of the history of the society, concentrates on how it changed or was manipulated as its reputation grew and on the strengths and weaknesses of the various sections within it. The book also highlights the impact the artists had on tourism to Cornwall and lists all venues outside St. Ives where society members exhibited. This is a revised edition which includes additional information on a number of artists and further illustrations.

About the author, born in 1953 David Tovey was educated at Tockington Manor, near Bristol, and Clifton College. He won a scholarship to read Jurisprudence at Pembroke College, Oxford and qualified as a solicitor in 1979. His intense interest in the St. Ives art colony was inspired by the fact that his great-grandfather, William Titcomb, was one of the early settlers.
